Why does this site exist? (And why did you link me to it?)

This question is a two parter, so I suppose I should answer it in two parts. The first part of this question is, "Why does this site exist?" I think the best way to answer that question is, " to help me help you." You see, this site will have answers to common problems with computers, information on how to ask me a good question, and any number of other things to prevent me from repeating myself 8 million times to different people.

But there is a second part to this question. The second part is, "Why did you link me to this site?" The answer could be any number of reasons. I could've linked you here because I felt that the information you were looking for was already here, or I could've linked you here to tell you how to ask a smart question. I also could've linked you here to tell you what to do in the event that I don't have the answer to your question in the "common questions" section, and that I don't know the answer off hand.

Windows users read this!

This section started in my exasperation at the amount of problems that people were having with Windows.

Firstly, to discourage people from asking me really stupid questions (as in, ones that can be answered with the aid of Google, or ones that I've told them the answer to, or ones without enough detail!), I have unfortunately decided to start charging a small fee for help with Windows. I think that at first, it would be fair to begin charging $0.50 per problem. (Of course, problems or questions that take up a lot more of my time will cost more, as will services that require on-site support.) Now that that's out of the way, I will move on.

Secondly, I think it's important to note that I'm not a Windows user. That, of course, makes it extremely difficult for me to see what you're seeing - even more so than usual. So, don't be stupid about asking questions. Don't say something like "When I clicked a button in Fooby Foomatic, I got an error. What's wrong?" There are three pieces of information that are crucial to a good question, and those are: What did you do? What did you expect to see? What did you see? In What did you see? it is extremely important that you give me the exact message you saw - without it, it is extremely difficult to help! However, if you didn't get an error, and are simply asking how to do something, I like to have a different set of information: What are you using? What are you trying to do? What have you tried so far? Hint: What have you tried so far includes searching the web - tell me what you've searched for!

I hope this has been helpful - sorry for any inconvenience!

I can't find something on the web (Or: I'm looking for this web site that's down.)

My best suggestion is to use Google. I have nothing to do with those sites and chances are I really don't care. Sorry. If you'd like to pay me to find it, we can negotiate a price.

I need help with my Flurbly Fooblomatic 2000. (or other thing that you didn't create)

Have you tried Google yet? No? Go try searching there.

Wow, back so soon? I take it since you came back you didn't find the support you were looking for. Unfortunately, the harsh reality is that I probably don't use whatever product you're thinking of. You could try calling the manufacturer (you DO have a legitimate copy, right??), OR if it was freeware emailing the author. As was stated in the last section, if you'd like to pay me for, we can negotiate a price.

I have a programming question. (Or: I have a Linux question.)

Since both of these are pretty much the same from my standpoint, I will pretty much give the same advice. Firstly - Here are the four magic steps to getting me to answer a question.

When you ask me, I'm going to make you provide evidence that you followed steps 1, 2, and 3! Tell me what your three search terms were. I will not charge for programming or Linux questions, assuming that they do not take up too much of my time. (I'll always warn you before I think something is eating up too much time.) As I described in the win32 section, please answer the respective three questions - either What did you do? What did you expect to see? What did you see? or What are you using? What are you trying to do? What have you tried so far? Thanks!

It's something else.

Ah, so you have another question, do you? Well, go ahead and either IM me, talk to me in person, or give me an email - my email address is joshua <at> joshuawise <dot> com. The same rules still apply - be smart about my time. Thank you for reading this document - hopefully, you'll follow the instructions contained within, and make my day a lot easier.

Thanks again!
