I was trying to update ROM from version 1.03 to 1.10 (The latest published in the support website).
The iPAQ was connected to the pc via Bluetooth.
While updating the ROM, there was an error screen on my pc saying something went wrong with the update, instructing me to perform a hard-reset.
I tried to do hard-reset but all i get is an openning scren with HP's logo and "1.07" on top of the screen.
The screen never changes, even when i try to hard-reset it again.
I also tried taking out the battery and putting it back - but with no luck.
I performed a full-backup before the operation, so i have nothing to lose - i just want it to get back to life :(
Please, i need your advices.
Thanks

Hi

1.Try connecting the unit to the AC Supply.
2.Try Doing the ROM update when the unit is connected to the Cradle.(this is recommended)
3.not Via Bluetooth.

Thanks a lot for your quick response :)
But it is too late for me now to know that i had to do it via USB and not bluetooth :/ (stupid me)
Since the device only displays the described screen and wont start up i cannot connect it now to ActiveSync via USB.
Now i need to bring it back to life - in any situation - only then will i be able to update it to the lates version.
I assume i need some sort of a program that will connect to it via USB and hard-reset it.
Does anybody know of a solution for my problem?

The only solution I know is sending the unit back to HP. Resetting the handheld won't do anything. The BIOS is stored on a Flash ROM chip in your handheld that never loses its memory. Unfortunately, updating the BIOS through Bluetooth (:-O) corrupted your BIOS.

i found this post in another forum:
http://www.pdastreet.com/forums/showthread.php?threadid=39981
which shows there are some more people with the same problem.

I wonder what would HP guys do that i cannot do other than replacing a physical component in the device...
If they can reset it or upload an image then i think i'll be able to do it myself, won't i? (Don't judge me for my last experience :p)

I've read somewhere that there are rather advanced tools for this kind of thing. I don't mess with that higher-level stuff, but I imagine what they do is send the iPAQ instructions to restart or cancel the update. How they do it is beyond me.

Welcome to the club! I just shipped back my iPaq hp1940 today because of that very same problem, although in my case it happened even if I did try the update via USB. The problem seems to be that this patch still hasn't been properly fixed. HP first posted revision 1.10 in March. They quickly removed it from the web after being returned so many PDAs. They now posted it back and it seems the problem is still there. I called and to top it all off, they forgot about my case and didn't make the arrangements last week for purolator. I had to call them back to get things moving. I will be honest with you saying I sure don't have complete confidence in HP right now. I hope they'll fix everything properly...

I'm so happy now.
5 minutes ago i finaly managed to work it out.
What i did is this:
I downloaded the previous rom update (1.03), i connected the device to the USB, and to the power adaptor and started the update.
Surprizingly it WORKED :o
I don't know if it was supposed to work or if it's because of god mercing on me because i spend the last 8 hourse trying to figure out how to fix it. :)
(I don't really believe in god, but it was so awkward so it's the easiest to just say "god helped me"...)

After the update went well, i couldn't help it and ran the next update (1.10.20) - which worked too! (less surprizingly, now that i was using USB instead of Bluetooth...).

So, if it helps anyone else - please post here so people will know how to solve it.
otherwise tell me because it's probably one of the things i did in the last 8 hours that made the difference (Some of the things might sound stupid, but hey, when you're clueless u would try the stupides idea...).

good luck!

BTW - i like the new OS version :)

(And to think i almost purchased a service...)

hello,

Your are not alone. I had the same troubles. your solution helped me, bringing my ipaq 1940 back to life. I also dont know why, but I also downloaded an older version (initial version) from the hp site. It worked, also it wasn't connected via active sync.

but an installation with the newest (german)version didn't work. also after installing the oldest version. I've done it all via USB. the update with the new version starts only when connected via active sync (latest version). it starts and brings an error, just before the percentagebar starts counting. with hp screen with v 1.06 on it ... no hard reset works .... the same troubles as before ....????

no my pocket pc works again ... with the oldest version .... what can I do, that the update 1.10.20 runs ....??

I'm happy my so-called "solution" help you :)
I am clueless though about your specific problem with the german version.
Actualy i didn't even know there are localized versions of this updates.
Here in Israel we just install the english version and then apply some Hebrew patches to enable Hebrew (But i don't use it, i like english better...)
Did you try installing the 1.10.20 English version just for the try?
maybe if it works and then you re-upgrade to 1.10.20 German version it will do ok.
Good luck!

Hi. I'm having a problem that seems similar than the one you had: after uninstalling a program (no errors), my h1945 frozen.
If I soft reset, I get the HP logo booting screen, and the bar ends without going to a useable state.
If I do a hard reset, starts booting the [smaller] hp logo, but the bar ends without going to the today screen.
I have tryed also taking the battery off a few hours, but nothing changed.
The power button does not turn off the machine, I have to take battery off.

After reading your post, it seems that it is possible to upload and replace the corrupted BIOS even if the machine is not working. Right ? How?

Thanks for your help !

just do the following.

download the older version (initial version) which is available to download

connect the ipaq via usb with your desktop start the update (with the old version). no activesync-connection is needed. just usb.

after this step, which brings the ipaq back to life (with the old version), download the newest one. make shure, that you use new and empty ordes for the files. establish an active sync connection. connect via usb ... and it must work.

important: do not use a usb-hub!!! that was the reason why my update failed. just usb, without hub.

good luck!

Yep, that's what u should do.
I wonder why they always say an activesync connection is needed :/

The activesync-task is killed in the almost first step of the update. What you see with the HP-logo and the versisn numbers is the bootloaderscreen. If the device doesn't continue to boot PPC, the romupdate fails to set the restart-option in the last step of the update. Unfortunetly, when you try the update again, the utility checks for a working device and the connection of the powersupply and would like to transfer e special programm (EnterBootLoader.exe) to set the ipaq in the bootloader-mode to accept the update in the next step. You could force the romupdate-utility to skip these steps and to update the rom right away with putting a special key to the registry of the host-PC:

Start regedit.exe on the host-PC and look for HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\RomUpdateUtility\HB20 There you will find a key "ByPassBootloaderCheck". Create a new key (string) named "UpdateFile" with the value "H2B11020uo.nbf" or whatever the name of the Romupdatefile for the language of your ipaq is. BTW, you could not change the language of the ipaq with another file, because it's checked again. But this key tells the update-utility to skip previous checks and continue with the update and it will be removed by the programm after the update starts. If the update is succesfull, the boot-option is set to normal by the updateutility and the device should restart to normal operation.

You should be familiar with changing the registry of the PC. I am not responsible for any damage.

Hi, thank you very much for your help. I have had the "no connection" problem when trying to re-flash the iPaq, and I thought that fixing it was beyond my possibilities; then I sent the unit to HP for service. Perhaps with the solution presented here, I could fix it... thank you very much again.

Hi all, I had the same problem, but I could not conect to the PC, it said somthig like the conected device is not.....

I found out that on a iPAQ1940 u can do as follow.

1 Turn it of and take it out of the cradle.
2 Put it in the cradle at the same time hold down the middle navigation buttom
3 when it is in the cradle hold the middle navi. bottum and press the soft reset buttom in the side.

now it should find ur iPAQ1954 as a HP USB Device and you can now run the ROM update.

No need to remind me about this accident that happened exactly to me.

I just send back to HP for servicing, after five days i got back alive!

They thought be the ROM-FLASH was corrupted and replaced it.

i now never tried doing ROM update via bluetooth ever again!
